I am primarily a theoretical community ecologist, with some complementary experience in experimental ecology, microbiology and evolution. I worked on some of the earliest metacommunity models, demonstrating how dispersal among local communities may affect both local and regional diversity. These models are important for formalizing our understanding of metacommunity dynamics. I have also incorporated elements of network ecology (trophic biogeography & metaweb), ecosystem functioning (metaecosystems) and ecophylogenetics into this framework. I developped integrated approaches to understand how coexistence mechanisms shape the relationship between biodiverity and ecosystem functioning. I have also incorporated elements of evolutionary dynamics in my research program mainly by developing experimental approaches with microorganisms. I am now interested in disentangling the factors that shape the different facets of biodiversity, functional rarity ,functional biogeography & the relationship between humans and nature through the aesthetics of biodiversity and natural landscapes. I have directed or collaborated in several literature review and conceptual synthesis projects.

I am the scientific director of the Centre for the Synthesis and Analysis of Biodiversity (CESAB) which is a key program of the FRB (Foundation for Research on Biodiversity) and is an innovative and internationally recognized centre that offers researchers a place and time to synthesize and analyze existing data and information in the field of biodiversity research. Located in Montpellier researchers can find at CESAB the necessary means and infrastructure to share and enhance existing information, and to conduct analyses that address major scientific challenges in biodiversity research. More than 30 groups are active at CESAB and we host 400 researchers every years from all over the world.
